Homestretch

The primary mission of Homestretch is to assist seniors in reaping a measure of fulfillment during our final laps. Naturally, none of our lives will ever be entirely settled or neatly wrapped up. Everyone will go to the grave with some portion of our existence conspicuous with an “incomplete”. That’s just the way it’ll be.

“Nevertheless,” which, by the way, was the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen’s final word upon his deathbed…nevertheless, it’s my prayerful hope that this book will enable every elder to coalesce as many scattered pieces of life’s puzzle as desirable.

Homestretch begins with a segment on stretching, then continues with self-possession: the challenge, during the afternoon of adulthood, to locate one’s authentic crux and to live from that center of authority. Mature elders aspire to become whole (not perfect) persons, suitably integrated and complete: balancing sabbath and seeking, savoring and service, soul-work and summation.

Then, approaching the close of our earthly pilgrimage, we give ourselves over to life’s final passage without giving ourselves away. We’re summoned to surrender to death. The Infinite Love that ushered us into existence, has comforted and nudged us along the path, will ultimately hold us close far into seasons beyond counting.
